Description
California's Mono Lake at sunset. This shallow lake is known for its tufa formations, which were formed when underwater springs with calcium mixed with the carbonates found in the water. This resulted in underwater limestone towers, which became exposed when waters started to drop after the city of Los Angeles started diverting the srings that flowed into the lake. Since then the lake has become protected with efforts made to stem the drop in water levels.
